Photographic Applications
Photo Journalism
Photo Journalism is a new version of photography, its symbolically taking an image to form together a story of which it tells the viewer. Freelance photographers are usually hired out by publishers or publishers already have photographers integrated into the organisation, these photographers will be given a task or a few to go and take pictures of subjects that will catch the eye, will tell a story. Journalism is the noted recording of a story or multiple stories to inform the audience in a way, such as telling them news, with photo journalism it is basically the same but a picture is taken in place of all the notes.
Actually, you will find if you read a lot of magazines to do with celebrities that is packed with photo journalism, all people hear about the red carpet in Hollywood where celebrities walk down it to watch the premier of their movie or someone else's, you see all the paparazzi scattered everywhere with all their camera's, that's photo journalism, they recording what is happening at that event so it can tell a story, when paparazzi take pictures of celebrities, say gaining a few pounds or becoming pregnant, that once again is photo journalism, however it is also invading of privacy.

These days photo journalism is used in a variety of publishers, whether these are newspapers, magazines, web articles, etc. they're all incorporated into it. More than other however. Originally photo journalism came from newspapers because in the 19th century coming to the golden age photographers/journalists had much more capability and ability to what they can take pictures of due to the uprising in inventions and other nick nacks. Along the way of this uprising some codes and conventions were put in place to make photo journalism what it is today. The main important convention is to never stage an event. you can't promote fake content because it can turn back on you and possibly sue you. For example if you took a picture of a celebrity naked without them wanting to, thats invading privacy and you could be prosecuted for it.
A great example of photojournalism would be the role model Anne Darling, she was a french photographer who happened to of taken a picture of the happening of 911 and it changed her life from being an average photographer to a photojournalist getting more and more pictures of events and telling more and more stories.
Portraiture
Portraiture links to a lot of the other categories you see throughout this blog post, fashion, fine art, photo journalism, but what is portraiture? we have to types to photography scenes, landscape and portrait. Portraiture consists of using portrait to capture a subject and make into an essential photographic application. You will find that portraiture is used in fashion a lot more than other types because modelling and fashion wants to focus on the subject, not the background, just the subject or the subjects clothes, the background oftenly will consist of something such as a street or grainy white/grey background because its there as a filler.
Portraiture photographers can be hired, however almost all photographers will use portraiture so this is where it will link back to the other categories in here. Portraiture can never be unintentionally taken, like wam bam take a picture on the camera sideways, it takes skill, and plenty or rehearsal, as well as staged events. Especially when it comes to fashion because the subject is the most important aspect, which is where lighting comes into the picture. Three types, key, back, and fill, the key light is directly in for the subject and will give the the normal lighting to the subject, with shadows, the back light will separate the subject from the background because it is nice to be able to see where the fashion ends and begins and that its not a part of the background, which is also handy for greenscreen. The fill light will fill in the excess shadows and lighting up the subject more causing the hard and soft shadows depending on which you want.

In the picture above there is a great example of portraiture, focusing on just the subject, with the ability of knowing where the subject is compared to the background, promoting fashion of course.

Advertising/Promotional
Advertising and promotional photography are separate units, but also very alike in many way's. Yes both of them promote something, you will find with advertising they are promoting a product through a picture, adverts are of course involved but since this is photography the advertising photography aspect comes through publishing. Magazines, billboards, newspapers, web articles, web adverts etc. But how? Take McDonald's for example, a well known fast food restaurant where we see a lot of pictures of, we see them on our facebook, twitter, and various other websites, sometimes we see them at bus stop billboards. That is how advertising photography works, its promoting a picture, essentially visually persuading a person to go buy a product.
Now promotional is more the media side of photography, when I say this I mean shows, films etc. Yes photography has a type for media. To explain promotional, its the act of showing a subject to an audience in the pursuading and informing way. TV shows always use promotional photography, take Arrow for example as seen in the picture below, its a type of poster from the TV show, but what we also notice is actually from the TV show it's used for cover photo's and other essentials. The way in which advertising and promotional comes together is self explanitory, explain promotional is having a picture of a product and it is informing, entertaining, or pursuading the audience to view it, therefor ppromoting it. Advertising is the promotion of a product/subject in which it pursuades the audience. When it comes to photography it consists of still life subject and products.
Fashion
Fashion has been mentioned multiple times but never truly been explained, clothes. Fashion photography is the stage of photographing different types of clothes, fabrics, and various other fashion. You will find publishers only ever use fashion photography on websites, web videos(putting together a photograph compilation), and magazines. Magazines as you may know is the big seller to fashion promotion as it gives all the latest and greatest hip trends. The reason why we use fashion photography is simple, people want a visual realisation of what a piece of clothing looks like, why would you want to buy a dress but have to wait to go to the store just to see if they have the one you like. Fashion photography brings many industries together and gaining more money for photographers, especially freelance.
Freelance is used a fair amount throughout the fashion industry, but you will find the real high organisations and publishers will have their own studios and photographers because it will be to the same standard they want it to consist of, now fashion always will use lighting, key, fill, and back because it relates back to portraiture, we are wanting it to focus on the subject nothing else. A great example of a fashion picture is seen below, you can tell by the soft shadowing that a great distance of fill light is used.

High Street studio
This type of photography is in the name, it is photography that has been taken in a high street studio, typically this form of photography is the most productive. Seeing as though the equipment used would only ever have to be moved around in the studio and the lighting can always stay the same. Relatively speaking the other types do not relate to this type of photography because of how simple and standard it is, for example a normal photo shoot of families and people, this is where a studio comes in handy, people come in pay the price get the pictures done and then your ready for the next person, gaining a profit in the meantime. However a downfall can be that you need the customers to come to you. But this is where a high street saves you because it is basically a town centre, constantly busy.
As you can see in the picture above this is what I am talking about as using family pictures as an example, in the picture below you will actually see what a high street studio will look like, it may not be shown in the picture(the highstreet) but it is actually there.
Architectural
Architectural photography in my personal opinion is one of the mightiest types of photography ever made, yes it is not hard, but the effort and detail put into it is remarkable. Architectural photography is the consistency of taking pictures of buildings and other types of architectures. As you can see in the image below being an example it shows what architectural photography is, yes it is just a building but that's the point, the focus point, or the subject is the building. The exterior isn't just what this type is about, the interior is just the same and can be seen below as well.
Freelancers are often architectural because they will have been hired to inspect a building and photograph it for a company, or on the other hand promote it. Which is where promotion comes back, promoting a company in a various way. But enough about the other types, a great example for this area would be the first architectural photographer, "William Henry Fox Talbot" In the image below is what you can see of architectural photography at his day and age, not the best but a miraculous first photograph of buildings.

Illustration
Illustration is a weird side to photography, theres two ways it can be done, a pre way and a post way, pre being drawing illustrations, involving a person in it then taking a picture, or it could be taking a picture of a person then having illustrations added later on. To explain illustrations is basically drawing and elaborating on a subject or background making it more realistic. Which is where the 3D artists come into mind, In New York you would see a few street 3D artists, or even on YouTube there are recording of 3D artists, but also a picture below to what it is. Photographers come into the picture by going round freelance and photographing these events where artists have made their art.
Another type of illustration is pop illustration and that is to have card, or any other paperish material and draw on them, then taking a photograph, this qualifies as illustration photography and however you will not ever find a company willing to devote photography to illustration it is still an option to freelancers.

Fine Art
Fine art photography is all done with the mind of the cameraman, he/she will be the accordance to what style the photograph will be, all the styles are all over this blog, fine art consists of a client being able to come tell what a photographer what they would like but the max they could give is the theme, the rest is up to the photographer, to produce the art within a photograph. It is using the creative mind of the photographer to perform fine art, if you give more than a theme then it is going to ruin the artistic aspect to the photographer and you will turn out with lesser quality pictures without any imagination.
Fine art without saying will always mix and combine with the other types here to give more creative vision within the photograph, as you may see above this is the combination of fine art and portraiture.

Documentary
Documentation in simpler terms, taking notes, but picture form, once again this relates to photojournalism, however this is a less involved into privacy type of photography, documenting an event can be extremely important so there is actual proof the event happened. Documentary photography originally came from the war, as one of the soldiers documented and photographed all of what happened during the war, as well as pictures of the trenches and other sections in the war. Now the war is a very uneasy place to be documenting but it is what made history, so this is where photography can be thanked for being in the world for saving history.
Documentary will never need to be imaginative just informing and the main point is to capture the moment, as you can see in the image above this is what a war photographer looked like. You can still find out more on war photographers in the video below.
Practical
To begin, before actually pulling off the practical side of this unit I need to mention the equipment I used, the camera is a Nikon D5200 with a 55mm VR2 Lense, alongside a 52mm CPL filter. With the occasional use of a tripod. When I was in the process of taking pictures I always had to keep in mind the framing the type of image I was wanting to take whether it was portraiture, or even architectural.
Final Images:
This image above has actually had the use of photoshop in it, you might be able to tell but if you can't the sky has been brightened and an overall blue in the picture has been added, this was done by using photoshop>Adjustments>colour balance. The foreground is meant be out of focus as this picture was taken in a moving car, since you can tell the background is clearly in focus you can tell that I want the background to be the subject.

Above are a few of the pictures I have taken throughout for this assignment, as you may see in some of them above you can tell what they are, for example the photo directly above this text is a portraiture shot, when some of these picture were being taken they were intentionally taken, so if any could possibly be staged they were.
